Leon Ireland from Moksha…

Just received this bad news from the Viscomm e-group.

Leon Ireland who used to sing for the band ‘Moksha’ died last night in his sleep owing to a massive heart attack. He was 31 years and never had a complaint of heart trouble even just asthma. He was married for a few years now but no kids….May his soul rest in peace…
Leon was my senior at VisCom, Loyola College,Chennai.

The shocking news reached our family quite late. Leon and I have studied in the same school in Kharagpur, he was a couple of years senior to me. He was an amiable friend and a jolly-good fellow always. His mother Mrs. Yvonne Ireland was my father’s colleague and because of this we were like family friends. Leon was a favourite among all while in school since he clinched the best athlete’s award almost every year in the Annual School Sports Meet. I last met him in the year 1997 while he was emerging as a heart-throb all rock-lovers in Chennai. I’m deeply grieved by his unexpected demise at such an unripe age. I express my condolences to his bereft family. May his soul rest in peace.

Leon Ireland… the guy with the straight handle bar cycle – HERO Ranger, a la Salman Khan in the just released Maine Pyar Kiya.

A rock star even before he attained ‘moksha’

This guy was a super athlete, a dream to watch on the basketball court… Like Anirban Dutta, I was a junior of Leon Ireland in school.

He made the ranger a style statement in school and around town… he sure had a way of turning heads and he was the icon – with the subtle, signature smile, the always ready enthusiasm and an exuberance that made him a champ. with kindergarten kids and grown up teen girls.

My last memories of Leon were of the fading kind, after school, each went their own way…

and then one day, before i was on first name basis with the local rock groups… probably 1997-98 when a batchmate (school) Jojo John mentioned that Leon has become a rock star now…

    cut through to 2004, i think…

Moksha was performing in the Med college grounds in Bangalore – koramangala. I tagged along with a few kid friends i’d made while in blore…

And then was when I saw LEON on stage…

while i could have and now i know i should have, I didnt go up and say “hi there leon, long time…”

    Wish i had done that… then…

His close friends would most evidently miss the lovely times that only Leon can create, and knowing a little bit of his magnetism, I am certain he will live on… in the hearts of his friends, in the songs of the Moksha and in the web pages…

Infact, my brother Zaheer Ahmed and Leon were class mates in school and together they were a hit on the basketball court… ironically this brother of mine has been in chennai for sometime now and it was only when i called him yesterday to tell him about this sudden trip of life did he realise how close he was and yet how far…

WAS HE (MR. LEON IRELAND) THE SAME PERSON, WHO USED TO STAY IN KHARAGPUR (WEST BENGAL) IN HIS CHILDHOOD ?

It is indeed a shock, I knew leon from my childhood days. We used to play cricket together and i remember him as a gracefull batsman.

Even when i left india and settled in Bahrain, we used to be in regular touch.

My mom (Ms Rafique) was shocked also)

Our old chum Alex , also has passed away and within a span of 1 month. I have lost two good friends.

I was in UK when i got the news and called him mom the very next month, she was shocked and so was his wife.

Leon – you were great mate, lets meet again when i am up there. by the way , i quit smoking, (you always used to chid me abt it).

    So long old friend.

    Manna – Bahrain

P.S – If anyone has any contact address of his brother . i.e Peter Ireland, Curtuz Ireland, Pls email me at nishunaeem@yahoo.com
